It happens to me too. Life happens, emails stack up, your kids get sick, you get behind on your business endeavors, that trip you’ve been meaning to take never happens, your family/friends need you on your one day off.
And you sit there and think . . . ”when’s it ever going to go my way?” and “when is life just going to…work?”
In these moments, I know how hard it is to feel overwhelmed and stuck and behind in life. I’ve been there many, many times.
At the time that I started coaching school, I was not very much in the know about personal development. I mean, I had seen “The Secret” and totally dug it, and I had read some astrology books, but other than that, I was a personal reflection newbie.
Being in school changed my life, not just because of the tools I acquired, but because I got to now use all these amazing tools on myself. One tool in particular, is one that I still use all the time with myself and my clients whenever we’re feeling stuck and wondering “am I making the right decisions in my life right now?”
And it’s called Future Self.
The idea behind this is that we all have “purpose” or a “path” in life. It’s the life that we’re meant to live. The life that our spirit and soul most want. And it KNOWS the way. But somewhere along the line, we forget or get confused amongst the piling up of bills and emails and stresses in life.
And so much of our attention gets placed on putting out current fires, that we forget to connect to our future visions of what we KNOW our lives are meant to be like.
You’re reading this right now and it’s almost Spring, which is all about birth. And beginning to come out of the cozy phase of winter and starting to romp and run amongst the wildflowers.
And to me, there is no better time to connect to your future self than right now. So I thought I’d send along a little advice on how to get ahold of him or her (since I doubt he/she’s on FB).
Step 1: Get comfortable in your chair or find a comfy lying down position.
Close your eyes and start to slow your breathing down.
Step 2: Imagine yourself 20 years from now. And you are walking up to the door of the house where your future-self lives.
Let your mind wander. Notice the images that show up.
What kind of house do you live in?
What kind of person is your future self?
How does he/she greet you?
Who is he/she with?
Are there pictures on the wall?
Step 3: Sit down with him/her on the couch and have a conversation with her. Ask her any question you want to know.
Some examples are:
What do you want me to know right now?
When you were my age what is something you wished someone would have told you?
What do I need to know in order to get from where I am to where you are?
Do you have any advice for me?
Step 4: Give him/her a hug and say thank you and leave the house.
Step 5: Come back into your body in the room where you are right now.
Step 6: Write down every bit of information you can remember from your conversation with your future self. Be sure to include how you felt, what you saw, what you remember.
Step 7: Tease out any “aha moments” or takeaways that you want to remember moving forward.
We all have an inner knowing (or sixth sense). It’s that voice inside that whispers to us when we’re on the right path. It might say “Yes…do THAT” or “No…take some more time”. Usually, life is so noisy that we don’t even hear the messages when they show up.
This exercise is all about teaching you how to connect that that inner knowing and have access to it whenever you want. I can’t wait to see how awesome your future self is! Share your visions with me in the comments below, I’d love to hear about them.
Cheers from my future self who is sipping on a hot toddy in my mountain cabin, 20 years from now!
xo,
Sally
