There’s no easier and cost effective way to update your look than a shiny new coat of nail polish.
It’s a self-care ritual that never fails to lift spirits. But, traditional formulas have been criticized for being full of toxins that are harmful for your body.
The five commonly used hazardous chemicals in nail polish to watch out for are:
- Toluene – a volatile chemical neurotoxin commonly found in paint thinner
- Formaldehyde – a component of tobacco smoke, this known human carcinogen is used for embalming
- Formaldehyde Resin – less toxic derivative of formaldehyde that can cause skin irritation
- Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) – Banned in the EU, DBP has been shown to be toxic to the reproductive system
- Synthetic Campor -this irritant has been linked to causing nausea and seizures
Awareness for nail polish toxins has sparked many brands to change their formulas to be “3-free” (made without Toulene, DBP, and Formaldehyde) or “5-free,” (made without everything above). Thankfully, toxin-free doesn’t equate to bland color choices. Scroll down for the season’s fresh colors all provided by polish brands that are proudly “5-free.”
