When I say the word GOALS, what comes up for you?

I know for me it brings up feelings of “can I even achieve them” and “they’re going to take over my life” and “it’s too overwhelming, why bother“.

For many others (maybe even you), the word goals ignites panic. Shame. Unworthiness. Or visions of ultimate failure. Of never reaching the end. Of all work and no play.

And it’s sad. Because goals don’t have to be hard, difficult, questionably-achievable things. They can feel so much richer and more purposeful. And WAY more fun than we allow them to feel.

Late last month, I hosted the first ever Desire Map Workshop Level 2 at a private home in the hills of East Los Angeles. Essentially, this workshop was all about setting Goals With Soul (and was an extension of the workshop I hosted last October).

We gathered around the cozy sectional, lit some candles, cupped our mugs of tea and got down to the business of unpacking what we all believe about goals. And not surprisingly, the word goals wasn’t lighting up most of us there. Instead, we mused on dreams, intentions, magic, wishes, and aspirations. Doesn’t that already feel lighter and more fun?

Language is everything. So if goals aren’t floating your boat, try a new word. Pick something that feels good to say — and guess what? You just might end up enjoy the process of making those things happen.

After a beautiful morning, we dined on a healthy lunch provided by Four Cafe (one of my favorite spots in Eagle Rock, CA), soaked in a bit of sunshine that lovingly graced us with her presence (after talks of rain most of the day) and then got back down to the business of goal-setting.

What unfolded in the afternoon, was magical.

There was such connection and presence amongst the everyone in the room. Inner desires were unleashed. Truth was spoken. Transparency reigned (and I mean RADICAL transparency). It was truly an honor to just be in the room to witness everything that took place.

When we wrapped up, with a beautiful ritual featuring jasmine honeysuckle + crystals + wearable CDF art (created by Kate Holland Design), we headed into the dining room and were crafted a beautiful vegan, gluten-free, foraged meal by Mia Wasilevich from Transitional Gastronomy. The cherry atop an already beautiful day.

I know we all took away something precious from our time together (aside from delightfully full bellies).

Even though I was facilitating the work, I learned so much just by watching what unfolded for everyone.

I learned that it’s time to ditch the money shame (and start talking about the real numbers).
I learned that I want to be fully transparent in all parts of my life.
I learned that it doesn’t take much work to experience wonder.
I learned that some friendships are fast (and I kinda love it).
I learned that no matter how much (or little) you are earning, your heart still yearns for the same things. And I was reminded that doing the work of digging around inside ourselves while never “easy”, is always worth it.

I am so grateful that I get to be part of leading the Desire Map Workshops. Danielle LaPorte’s work has changed my life. And I truly mean that. Her words have been a guidepost for me over the last 7+ years as I’ve ventured away from a life of filmmaking to this new life I’m creating for myself, my love and my family.

There is some stuff in the world that just feels right. And The Desire Map is that for me. It just feels right. AND it totally works.

If you’re interested in staying in-the-know about future Desire Map workshops and retreats that are coming up here in Los Angeles (and possibly beyond), get on the interest list and you’ll be the 1st to know!

Thanks to Danielle, all of Team D for creating such powerful work.
And to the beautiful ladies in my very first Level 2 workshop – I adore you!

xo,
Stephanie
