A living legend :: why I love the Hollywood Bowl

2013

Living in Los Angeles has its perks.

If you know me and my history with this town, you might be surprised to hear me say this.
But I’ve come to know in the last few months of exploring, that it’s true.

A few obvious pluses come to mind:

* the fact that it’s pretty much 75 degrees and sunny, year round – doesn’t hurt
* you can quite literally get ANY type of cuisine you want here
* it’s a city filled with artists, art galleries and museums galore
* there’s glitz + glamour mixed with grit + grime – the contrast is oddly interesting
* music + music + more music

This last point brings me to one of my all-time favorite venues to see a musical performance.
And that, is the Hollywood Bowl.

The place is legendary.
I feel alive and full of energy whenever I’m sitting in my seat watching a performance, outside in the open air, surrounded by a beautiful canopy trees.
The place itself practically lives and breathes. It’s got an energy all its own and the sheer size is enough to leave you breathless. If you’ve ever attended a show here, you know what I mean.

My favorite experience so far was seeing Coldplay in 2003.
I was working at a talent agency in Beverly Hills at the time. One of the biggies, so we had box seats – score!
It was won of the most beautiful shows I’ve ever been to. The band sounded amazing. Their set was total perfection. The night air was perfectly chilled. Afterwards, I got to zip backstage to meet the band. It was all magical. Everything about it. I still talk about that show to people who will listen. ;)

So as I was digging around this seasons lineup {which is insane this year}, I discovered something about the venue that I didn’t know. The Hollywood Bowl has been around since 1920 and is the largest national amphitheater in the United States. Crazy, right? I had no idea.
Its humble beginnings and the story of how it came to be is really incredible. Its creation is a testament to what can happen when a group of passionate men and women come together, in support of art, theater and music. Which as you might know, I’m super passionate about.
Their initial dream, of adding something of artistic value to the Hollywood community, is still alive today. In the guitar solos of Joe Perry, the unmistakable steps of Savion Glover, the angelic melodies of India.Arie, and the classic sounds of Journey.

93 years later, the Hollywood Bowl is still going strong.
And this year’s line-up is, in my humble opinion, one of the most exciting yet.
No matter what your fancy – classical, country, soul or a little bit of rock ‘n roll – the 2013 season has something for every musical palette.

I have been to the Bowl several times over the past twenty years, and I am always amazed at how romantic a night you can have while just outside and down the hill from the amphitheater, you have the hustle and bustle of Hollywood & Highland.

My favorite recently was probably Diana Krall last August. I’ve seen her twice now there, and her sultry vocalizations always impress. Of course, the company you bring adds to the night, so I can’t give all the credit to Ms. Krall. Great post :)
