Growing up I had a huge appetite, for music.
And boy bands. I was a total sucker for boy bands.

If you ask me what I was listening to back in 1989, I can tell you – Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson & NKOTB (obviously) among others.
If you ask me what I was listening to the night I met my guy, I can tell you – Back At One.
Or the song that made me fall in love with him – Falling Slowly.

We all have a life soundtrack. The music that has accompanied us throughout our lives.
Why is music such an important part of our world?
It cuts through the noise and dives headfirst, straight into our bones.

I remember more song lyrics than I do just about anything else.
Music stays with you. It lives inside you.
And it’s Powerful, with a capital P.

Music is transformative and essential. It takes us on a sensory journey. Through our past, into the present moment and possibly even as we envision our future. Music is more than just a collection of notes artfully strung together; it is a part of us, from the inside out.

Lately in an effort to switch things up, I’ve been listening to a lot of new (to me) bands. With a few oldies but goodies thrown in the mix for good measure.

And instead of just listening to these songs with an ear for a fun melody, or a cute lead singer (i mean . . . just being honest) – I’ve been opening my ears to any and all kinds of tunes. And just letting the sound filter through my soul. I call it, listening on purpose. And it’s led me to a few great bands in the last few months that I want to share with you.

The Soonest

The guys have been on my radar since back in 2009-ish. I’ve been a fan through multiple name changes, numerous new band members and an indie rock sound that has majorly evolved. They’re the real deal. And they’re the nicest guys around.
Grab their tunes + peep this video I shot for a GET TO KNOW post a few years ago + keep your ears sharp for their next EP which should drop soon.

Johnny Hi-Fi

Ok. I’m biased about these guys I admit. I’ve directed + produced a few of their music videos (including the one below). I’ve known them for 6+ years. And I’m dating the lead singer (tee hee). But all that aside, I simply had to include them in this list because of how purely talented they are.  Though the band has gone through many iterations, band members and multiple big moves, they’re still here and not going anywhere anytime soon. Thank goodness. ‘Cause I kinda love them.

Rixton

These Brit boys are poised to take over the airwaves with their sweet brand of pop/rock/r&b. Their album comes out later this year. Get ready. You’ll be hearing their names a lot very soon.

Haim

Three sisters from the Valley of Los Angeles have become one of the hottest female bands around. They just got off a four month long European followed by North American tour. They’ve opened for Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine – and they show no signs of stopping anytime soon. At least I hope not. I LOVE these girls!

Cage The Elephant

I first heard these guys earlier this year when I stumbled on their profile on Spotify. All I can say is THANK YOU Spotify. These Southern boys know how to write songs. Their sound continuously evolves. Each album feels distinctly different than the previous. I love that they push themselves to stay on their creative edge. They’re always on my go-to playlist.

Broods

There must be some kind of magic that happens when family members get together and write music. This brother/sister duo hails from New Zealand and is creating quite the buzz on the music scene right now. I’m a big fan of their electro-pop sound. It feels organic and fresh and yet familiar. It’s the kind of music you just want to listen to on repeat.

Craft Spells

I have to thank Guest Editor Catherine Vo for introducing me to Craft Spells a year or so ago. Her and I share pretty similar music tastes so when she recommended I check them out, I knew I was gonna like what I heard. This band is amazing. I’m loving their latest EP, which shows a great level of maturity and emotion. This is another band I can have on repeat and never get sick of listening. Absolutely one to check out!

The Head and the Heart

Seattle puts out some amazing talent. And The Head and the Heart is no exception. They’ve gone from busking on the streets of their hometown to headlining well known venues across the country. They’re on tour now through October and will probably be playing in a city near you (be sure to check out their website).

What bands are YOU loving right now? What role does music play in your life? Is there a way you can make listening to music an even more immersive and enjoyable sensory experience?
